I think the Java plugin would be a good model.  You probably want to
have a look at the Java SE 6 Update 10 (currently a release candidate).

They decided for a new implementation of the plugin with this release.

Interestingly, it seems like a new technology cycle started.  People are
now putting everything in their own processes again.  Not sure what to
think about that yet, though.
