I'm not sure either, but I just applied something very much like this in r32652; Also 
converted all existing syntax using the original version (mostly with an empty library string 
anyway) to use the new, shorter syntax. all tests pass.

Updated the DEPRECATION notice to be post 0.8.1 ; until now, we haven't been able to move 
to the new syntax; after this release, we can remove the old syntax.
