[perl #55210] [RFC] pattern matching with an opcode

Per allison, our pattern matching is going to be done with PGE, not via opcodes. (Interestingly, 
we had started out with opcodes, but that path was dropped many years ago.)

Patrick may still be able to salvage some of the ideas here, but as it stands, this won't get 
applied to core.
